Art covers a wide range of techniques, including oil painting, watercolor, print techniques and many more.
Students also get an opportunity to learn about different genres of art and types of artists from Holbein to German Expressionism!
What a typical session looks like
What we do in Art
- A typical session runs for 2 hours with a 15-20 minute break in the middle.
- The session starts with the students finding and setting up their own materials. The subject of the session is then introduced, with a discussion about the artist or technique of the day.
- There is then a demonstration.
- Students spend the rest of the session creating their own artwork, some like to work independently, others have support.
- The end of the session is about sharing the work they have done in the session and the class discusses what they like about each other’s work. The students then help to clean up the materials and space.
- We have some incredibly talented artists at PiP and want to help them to develop their practice and flourish as creatives!
The difference we make
Art is great as an exercise in mindfulness and relaxation as well as a form of creative expression.
Many students find Art helps them to focus and also to relax, giving them a period of calm in what can be a hectic day.
It’s a great way of exploring creativity and articulating what you may not be able to verbalize.
Art shows students how to follow through a process to completion, to finish a piece of work, whether it’s over the period of a session or a whole term.
Students take great pride in their finished artworks, up building up their confidence and self-esteem.
Art gives many students the time and space to focus on something that is entirely their own.
Art gives students opportunities to connect with artists and institutions outside of PiP including regular projects with the National Gallery and by selling their artwork in our Pipadilly pop up shop.
Student Success Story
Art of Communication
Kelly sometimes finds verbal communication challenging but through the art class, she has developed her communication skills. Kelly’s interest in art helps her to articulate how she feels or what she likes about a particular painting or to explain what colours and materials she wants to use. It’s a great place for her to exercise her independence, choosing what projects she wants to work on and the scale of them. Kelly has an amazing eye for colour and makes large scale paintings on canvas.
